REVIEW: Yeelight Smart LED Filament Bulb (+ introductie Yeelight in Homekit)

Hello and welcome to my first video review for my .

.

.

Tweakblog 'My Smart Home'.

This first review is also a special one .

.

.

because thanks to Yeelight we can try out a brand new product that hasn't even been released yet! But which, to my opinion, could very well be a gap in the market.

We are going to look at the new Yeelight Smart LED Filament bulb.

That's quite a mouth full.

.

.

.

.

.

but it basically means that it looks like an old fashioned light bulb.

.

.

.

.

.

but in reality it's a full blown Smart LED light.

It's still unknown when this bulb will be released to the market.

.

.

.

.

.

and the price is also still unknown.

But probably the price will be in a similar range as the previous Yeelight Smart LED bulbs.

So that means, reasonably affordable.

So, let's start! As you can see, the Yeelight Smar LED Filament Bulb is well packaged in a box .

.

.

with the matte white design we know from all Yeelight products.

However, in contradiction to previous Yeelight products they have abandoned the completely white boxes .

.

.

like we know from, for example the regular Yeelight Smart LED bulbs from Yeelight, .

.

.

like this one.

Instead they have chosen for a full colour printed box which immediately shows what to expect.

For selling the bulbs this is probably a smart choice, But I myself was quite fond of the previous minimalistically designed boxes.

But, what are we talking about.

It's just a box! More relevant is what's mentioned on the box.

It mentions for instance that this Smart Led bulb can be connected to both Google Assistant as Apple Homekit.

And the Homekit is actually something new for Yeelight .

.

.

because up till now the Yeelight products could only be connected to the Google Assistant.

But starting with this product it is possible to connect Yeelights with the Apple Homekit.

Also more good news for the people who use Homekit .

.

.

because really soon all other Yeelight lights can also be connected to Homekit! This also applies for the existing lights which will receive an update .

.

.

and can then be connected to Homekit as well.

Furthermore we can see on the box that this bulb * meow * .

.

.

produces up to an impressive 700 lumen at circa 72 cents of energy costs per year.

The colour of the bulb is 2700 Kelvin .

.

.

which means it is a pleasantly warm-looking lamp .

.

.

which doesn't look artifically white nor too yellow.

According to the box installation is easy, .

.

.

it takes 30 seconds and no hub is required .

.

.

because the bulb can be connected directly to the WiFi network.

That's something we'll find out in a bit.

But first, let's unbox the Smart bulb.

Well, we can see a minimalistic design .

.

.

which honours the old-fashioned bulbs.

So, no bells and whistles.

Only the connoisseur will recognize the small Yeelight logo on the bulb.

But.

.

.

.

.

.

furthermore to the eye it looks just like the good old glass light bulbs.

However, more importantly than looks is how the bulb actually works, .

.

.

so let's plug the light into a socket.

As you can see the bulb is now connected to a power supply .

.

.

and is thus providing light.

Controlling the bulb is still impossible, .

.

.

so let's see how we can connect the Smart bulb to the Mi Home app, .

.

.

and if this is actually possible in the promised 30 seconds.

In the Mi Home app you can see, .

.

.

besides all currently conected devices, in the upper right corner a plus sign.

When we press this plus sign the app starts looking for new devices, .

.

.

and as you can see it finds the Filament bulb almost immediately.

This connection is established through Bluetooth, because .

.

.

the light isn't yet connected to the WiFi network .

.

.

which will eventually be used for controlling the Smart LED bulb.

When we press on the new Filament Bulb in the app we are requested .

.

.

to tell which WiFi router the bulb should connect to.

Notice that 5 GHz networks are not supported.

After entering all relevant information about the WiFi router, like the password, the SMart bulb will start connecting to the WiFi network.

After initializing the connection is successful .

.

.

and it's possible to tell the app in which room the bulb will be used.

This makes it easy to control multiple lights per room in the future.

Finally, we give the bulb a name.

And, we're done! Up till now, the installation is pretty close to the promised 30 seconds easy setup.

However, as you can see, the light now starts with a initalisation process.

.

.

What it's doing right now is quite a mystery to me, .

.

.

I suspect it's installing new firmware to the bulb .

.

.

but the app doesn't give any information on this.

This so-called initialisation eventually took .

.

.

an astonishing 8 minutes, which is a lot more than the expected 30 seconds And that's a real shame.

But after this 8 minutes the light is fully operational .

.

.

and can be controlled from the app.

It's possible to use timers, and there is a number of pre-programmed scenes which can be used.

WIth this the Filament bulb has become a full-blown Smart bulb.

Installing the Filament Bulb in Domoticz is, just like with all other Yeelight bulbs, no problem at all.

Using the IP-address that was assigned to the bulb, .

.

.

it's easy to add the bulb to an existing Domoticz infrastrcuture.

Now the bulb can be easily controlled from the Domoticz software.

The Yeelight Smart LED FIlament Bulb It's a mouth full, but we have tested it.

We started with the box and ended with a Smart bulb that actually works.

According to the box set-up should've been possible in 30 seconds, .

.

.

but in reality this took a bit more.

It took a bit longer, but in the end it's, .

.

.

just like with other Yeelight bulbs, rather easy to install.

There's no hub required.

And the design looks basically like the old-fashioned Light bulb, but with all the Smart functionality like we know and love from the Yeelight lights.

And with that, the Yeelight Smart LED Filamant Bulb scores .

.

.

a well deserved 9 out of 10 And with that I end this first video review from my Smart Home Tweakblog.
